abstract
in his last years of life americans had almost forgotton steinbeck, and those who had not, occasionally criticized him for supporting and praising the u. s. military intervention in the vietnam war. althought ateinbeck incorporates different themes into his works, each one bears many signs of his concern and sympathy for america and the american common people in particular. steinbecks to a god unkown vividly shows his passionate love for the land, and the grapes of wrath reveals his deep affection and sympathy for the american homeless farmers. steinbeck in east of oden deals with the problem of morality in the american society. today, however, steinbeck is considerod to be one of the major writers of the american literature in the 20th century. apparently the real value and importance of steinbecks works are still unnknown to the american weadees. but fortunately the university seminars on his works throughout the u. s. are offering a now exploration into his deep feelings and a concern for man in general.
